Business minister Dr Vince Cable has urged more women to go into engineering to help solve the UK’s chronic skills shortage. On a visit to GE Aviation in Bishop’s Cleeve, Dr Cable said perceptions of manufacturing and engineering as male-dominated sectors had to change.

Making History: Andrew Littlefair (Trustee, Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation Board), Philip D. Murphy (US Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany), Klaus Wowereit (Governing Mayor of Berlin), and Ferdinando Beccalli-Falco (CEO of GE Europe) unveil the plaque in honor of the 25th anniversary of President Reagan’s “Tear Down This Wall” Address at the Brandenburg Gate.

Berlin Mayor unveiled a plaque commemorating the 25th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan’s historic challenge to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall. As an actor, Reagan was the public face of GE in the 1950s and 1960s. GE sponsored the event.

“How do you get someone from secondary school to be a welder or something like that?” says Jeff Immelt, the chief executive of General Electric, recalling his work on Obama’s Jobs Council. “No country in the world does that as well as we need to: not the US, not the UK. Every country ought to have a consistent focus on graduating more engineers.”
