GE Jumps to 3rd Place in Top 100 Ideal Employers for Engineering students in China

2011 Universum Results

In a recently announced 2011 Ideal Employer Ranking, GE ranked No. 3 in the Top 100 Ideal Employer list for engineering students in China, following both State Grid and China Mobile. Jumping 11 positions from last year’s 14th to 3rd, GE ranked the highest among all the other multinational companies this year.

Tapping into China’s Tech Talent: Cleaner Coal R&D

The joint venture between GE Energy and Shenhua Group Corporation to develop coal gasification technologies in China is one of the keys to commercial-scale deployment of cleaner coal solutions.

One of GE’s recently announced China deals is the coal gasification joint venture that’s been formed with Shenhua Group to sell and develop gasification technology and advance the deployment of “cleaner coal” solutions in China. Tied to that effort is GE’s 1,400-person strong China Technology Center in Shanghai, which has been tapping into the country’s homegrown scientific talent since it was launched in 2000.

John G. Rice “We need to be a 24×7 company everywhere”

John Rice

John G. Rice, vice-chairman of General Electric Co. and president and chief executive of GE Technology Infrastructure, is scheduled to shift from the US to a new base in Hong Kong. It will be the first time a GE executive as senior as him will relocate from the company’s headquarters. In an interview in Delhi, Rice said the move will bring the multinational company more in tune with local needs.

China Deals Open Door to U.S. Jobs; Chinese Tech & Markets

Among the agreements already in place are those for cleaner coal plants, avionics, and high-speed passenger rail in the U.S. — all of which are helping create and support U.S. manufacturing and R&D jobs.

With China experiencing one of the largest rural to urban migrations in history, a number of aviation, energy and rail agreements have been signed between GE and China over the last 14 months. During Chinese President Hu Jintao’s visit to Washington this week, updates will be announced on the deals, which are designed to help one of the world’s fastest growing markets meet its infrastructure challenges in sustainable ways — and to create and support U.S. jobs, provide unprecedented access to Chinese technologies and markets, and generate a new wave of growth for GE. In terms of jobs, the deals will support nearly 4,700 in the U.S., including those along GE’s U.S. supply chain.

$2.5B in Investments; $1.4B in Deals; and 25,000 EVs Later

GE’s locomotive plant in Brazil, seen above, provides an example of how the global push can translate into growth in hot markets such as Brazil, and jobs in the U.S. In the deal just made to supply rail operator MRS with 115 locomotives — the largest order in Brazil’s history — the locomotives themselves will be manufactured in GE’s plant in Contagem, Brazil, while the12-cylinder engines and key components will be made in GE’s Grove City, Pennsylvania plant.

There were certainly a lot of zeroes in the numbers tied to GE’s recent globetrotting series of moves. From new R&D centers in Brazil and China to a new plan to double U.S. exports, here’s a by-the-numbers snapshot at a busy week focused on global expansion, U.S. jobs, and technology transformations.
