Canton Leisure Services recently joined forces with more than 100 General Electric employees in an eco-challenge to clean up the Lower Rouge River Recreational Trail. The volunteers were part of an Information Management Leadership Program training bootcamp being held at GE’s Advanced Manufacturing and Software Technology Center, a state-of-the-art IT and research facility in Van Buren Township. Falling in line with GE’s strategy to give back to the communities where its employees live and work, GE volunteers planted 2,000 square feet of wetland vegetation, cleaned up hundreds of bags of litter and debris, and provided general habitat management along a three mile stretch of the Lower Rouge River Recreational Trail.

When GE announced the creation of its Advanced Manufacturing and Software Technology Center outside of Detroit, Michigan last year — expected to attract more than 1,300 scientists and engineers focused on information technology, clean energy and aviation R&D — it was a boost to the state’s hard-hit economy. But thanks to an innovative partnership, GE technology is about to make the Great Lake State a little greener, too, by transforming waste by-products into energy. GE is supplying the engines for the Visteon Woodland Meadows Project, a new renewable energy cogeneration facility that will turn nearby landfill gas into electricity and useable heat. After two years of layoffs, the U.S. job market is recovering — albeit more slowly than economists had hoped. A solid first quarter gave companies across the country the confidence to start hiring again, prompting many to add jobs and fill open positions.

General Electric recently announced plans to add 1,300 jobs in Michigan during the next five years. The company recently opened a new facility in Wayne County, Mich., and hired 220 people for the site. There are more than 2,000 job openings on the company’s career site. As a member of the Invest in America Alliance, GE has also committed to doubling the number of recent graduates it hires this year.
