GExtreme Makeover – MPS Edition

As a part of the GE Healthcare iCare initiative, GEHC IT and Process Excellence recently partnered with CompuCom to donate 45 computers to the Samuel Morse – John Marshall School for the Gifted and Talented, a Milwaukee Public School. On Wednesday, January 26th, students, employees and local media attended an unveiling event to see the new media lab for the first time since the project began in November 2010.
“Before the donation, I visited the class and a number of students seemed to be huddled around a few machines,” said Romel Tolbert, GE Healthcare IT Program Manager. “Immediately I knew there was a need to do something more.”
The new computers will be used in the school’s Digital Media class and will help the students gain exposure to these tools. Many of these students do not have access to technology at home, making school their only resource for this type of learning. The students are technologically savvy, and with the new computers they will have the opportunity to showcase and broaden their skills. Students will now be able to use Adobe Photoshop, video editing and graphic design programs right in their classroom.
GEHC also donated $8,000 worth of networking equipment, supplies, and manpower to renovate the computer lab to accommodate the new technology.
“It’s important for me personally to be involved in the donation because I was a student at Morse Middle School,” said Tolbert. “For GE to continue to do these things and to continue to have an impact on the Milwaukee Community… what more could you ask for?”
The students were able to see a great example of a professional community that knows the importance of giving back. With these students on the receiving end, they could see how powerful that is.
Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is the largest public school district in the State of Wisconsin, providing educational services to approximately 82,000 students in 184 schools located across the City of Milwaukee. GEHC has a history in working with Morse Marshall School, partnering with them for Community Service Day.
