The Louisville non-profit WaterStep estimates that a child dies every 20 seconds due to a waterborne illness and that 1.2 billion people, one sixth of the planet’s total, lack daily access to safe drinking water. Two GE engineers designed and built a rugged device using ordinary table salt and a car battery to make chlorine and kill pathogens. The device has already been purifying water at a school in Africa and in flooded villages in Asia.
