Building Relevant Work Experience

“If you get a ‘high-quality’ internship that gives you the chance to apply what you are studying in school, it will give you the opportunity to confirm that your major is really the right direction for the start of your career,” explains Steve Canale, General Electric’s manager of global recruiting and staffing services. “An internship is a great testing ground to make sure that you are on the right path.”

i need a good job.
Hi Frahan,

Good luck!
Well, here’s something I would like to know. I have decided not to apply for an internship so that I can finish my degree at one go. But that does not mean I have zero experience of paid employment. I had to juggle between 25 hours of lectures, 20 hours of part time job, 15 hours of home study, weekend parties, cricket matches, guitar lessons and cooking every week for the past four years. I earned close to £40000, paid a third of my total tuition fees, and got a first class Masters degree from a UK university, all by myself, in an alien city, and without my parents. I have taught students while I was learning myself. Does this not show my level of perseverance, adaptability, intelligence, effort and determination to succeed? I happen to manage the finances of the house that I share with my friends. I captain the cricket club that I play for. I have over 350 friends on Facebook and growing. Does this not prove my competencies of leadership and a charming personality? Still, after making over 450 applications for a graduate scheme, I am not even called for a single interview. I am really bewildered-if employers really look for experienced people, then what is the point of a degree and being a graduate? Or is it because I happen to be a third world citizen, and hence being looked down upon? What else can I do? Please advise. Thanks and apologies for the sob story.
Hi Tanwir,
The #1 reason candidates are screened out is because they lack wotk authorization in the regions where the positions are listed. GE has positions listed all over the world, so you’ll have a much better chance if you apply to a local region. Additionally, you must match the requirements of each position 100%. The only time the other qualifications you listed will come into play is if you pass that first screen — but if you do not match the job requirements you will be screened out.
Networking with recruiters is a good idea. If you can determine which GE business you would like to apply to we can direct you to the appropriate GE Careers group where you can speak directly with recruiters.
